Before any equipment shows up, we’ll work with you to define the job scope. Not every driveway needs a full replacement, and we won’t recommend one unless it’s necessary. Our local asphalt paving contractors will assess whether your surface qualifies for asphalt milling, which is a more budget-friendly way to renew the top layer without tearing everything out. But if the pavement is showing signs of deep cracks, drainage issues, or base failure, it may be time for asphalt replacement.

We’ll also discuss the specifics of your layout (any slopes, curves, or extensions you want) and provide a clear cost estimate. Scheduling driveway paving is a two-way conversation, and we’ll find a date that works best while accounting for weather, logistics, and material availability.

How Do I Prepare for Driveway Paving Day?

Once the scope is agreed upon and the schedule is locked in, we’ll give you a rundown of how to prepare for driveway paving. This includes:

• Clearing vehicles from the driveway and nearby access areas
• Removing portable basketball hoops, planters, or decorations
• Letting neighbors know if shared access might be temporarily blocked

We’ll keep an eye on the forecast. Rain can delay the job, and we’ll let you know in advance if rescheduling is necessary. Repaving a residential driveway requires dry conditions for proper bonding and curing.

The Driveway Paving Process

On paving day, our crew will arrive with all the necessary equipment and materials. Depending on the size of your driveway and the agreed scope, the work may take anywhere from a few hours to most of the day. You don’t need to be home the entire time, but we do recommend someone be available by phone in case decisions need to be made.

If we’re doing a full tear-out and replacement, we’ll start by removing the old surface and evaluating the base for stability. Then we’ll install and compact new layers of hot mix asphalt to create a smooth, durable surface.

For projects using asphalt millings, we’ll grind down the top layer and repave over the milled surface. It’s faster and more cost-efficient when the base is still structurally sound.

After the Job: Curing, Driving, and Maintenance

Once your asphalt driveway paving is complete, you’ll need to wait before driving on it. We’ll give you specific timing, but generally:

• Foot traffic is okay after 24 hours
• Vehicle traffic should wait 2–3 days
• Heavy vehicles or trailers should avoid it for a week

Curing time is essential for long-term durability. To protect your investment, we’ll give tips on maintaining an asphalt driveway, including when to schedule professional driveway sealcoating. For brand new asphalt, wait at least 90 days before sealing. Ideally, aim for 6–12 months to let the surface fully cure and for all oils to come to the surface.

We’ll also point out any early signs of wear you should keep an eye on, such as small cracks or dips. Prompt asphalt crack repair can prevent more costly issues later on.
